Mentoring and Advice for Talented High-school Students (M.A.T.H. Students), is an out-
reach program aimed at high school students with interest in mathematics. This program
consists of the following main features, described in more detail below:
• Advising by UGA graduate students,
• Modest book scholarships for the high school students, their school libraries as well
as the participating graduate students.
Advising
Each year roughly 3 high school students will be selected to spend one academic year in the
program during which time they will be assigned to a UGA graduate student to serve as
their advisor.
The official role of the advisor will be to aid the student in selecting books to optimally
develop their understanding of higher mathematics, that the program would purchase for
them as described below. In addition, we hope that they will give the students an impression
of the culture and practice of mathematics in an academic setting. The advising will be
carried out with two planned visits to UGA (once each semester) and with additional advising
over email.
Advisee and Library Book Scholarship
Each M.A.T.H. advisee will receive a yearly $220 book scholarship which they may use to
spend on math or science books. These books should be relevant to furthering their learning
of higher mathematics and not otherwise readily available to them. An additional copy of
each book which they purchase with their scholarship will be sent to their school library. In
the event that their library already has a copy of the book, the PI may elect to have a copy
sent to a different high school library where the book is not available instead.
Advisor Book Scholarship
Participating advisors will be given a yearly $220 book scholarship to be spent on mathe-
matics or science books necessary for their graduate coursework or research.
Student Requirements
Students need to be able to arrange their transportation to UGA for at least two visits to
the mathematics department, once each semester, coordinated with their advisors. Contact
information for thier high-school libraries should be provided to the program administrators
(contact information below).
Contact Information
This program is being administered by Daniel Krashen and Angela Gibney in the mathe-
